Our purpose

Science and tech terms you hear in the news. Things that seem odd when you think about them. Naru News explains them as clearly as possible and turns “huh?” into “naruhodo!” (Japanese for “Oh, I get it!”, and where the “Naru” in our name comes from).

Why we make this

AI is about to speed up science and technology like never before, and keeping up will only get harder. We started this paper to close that gap.

Scientific knowledge is a treasure built by many people who looked into things, checked them, and added to them. We untangle it and hand it to you.

Our yardstick

Whether you finish a page thinking “naruhodo!”

Four promises to our readers

  1. We start with a question

We don’t open with the answer. We ask one question, think through the answer that probably comes to mind first, and then answer it. A “naruhodo!” comes when your own guess gets turned around.

On our glossary pages, the term you came to look up is the question. We give its meaning in one line, compare it with a common mix-up, and let you check your understanding with a short quiz.

  2. We answer briefly, with pictures

The answer is short, shown with pictures and a video. The details are folded away, so read only as far as you want.

  3. We check the original sources before we publish

Our scripts stay within facts we first write down from papers and official sources. Numbers and firm claims are checked not just against announcements or news, but against the text of the original papers and documents. The checking is done by a different AI from the one that wrote the script, and by a person with a master’s degree in science and a Japanese high-school science teaching license. Each page’s “Sources and how we checked” section lists its sources and the date it was checked. Where opinions differ, we don’t present one side as the only right answer.

Our glossary pages also stay within facts checked against the text of the original sources, and a different AI from the one that wrote the page checks them against those sources. Each page’s “Sources and how we checked” section says whether a person checked it too.

  4. No ads, and we don’t track you

We don’t use ads or cookies. We count how many times each page is read with a tool that doesn’t identify individuals (Cloudflare Web Analytics). Videos load from YouTube only when you press play (see our Privacy Policy).
